In general terms, the garage door of your home should give you about 30 years of service before it needs to be replaced. However, if you are like most homeowners, you will try to stretch as many years as you possibly can out of the garage door you have. The only problem with this is, once a garage door reaches a certain age, you can almost guarantee you are going to start having a few issues. From rattling to getting stuck, your ailing garage door may be a hassle and in bad need of a replacement, but there are a few things you can do to squeeze a little more time out of the garage door you have.

Tighten up all of the hardware carefully.

The garage door is often viewed as one large thing, but it is really made up of several smaller components. Therefore, a lot of those little parts and pieces get loose and ragged with age. Grab a few tools and go over every component of your garage door, from  the hinges that hold the sections together to the metal guides along each side of the door, and tighten up all the hardware that you find. If there are screws, bolts, or other fasteners missing or loose, go ahead and replace them.

Give your garage door a good cleaning.

Over the years, your garage door can accumulate a hefty layer of grease, dirt, and dust. Unfortunately, all of this dirt and grime can actually hinder the garage door's hinged sections from operating as they should. Grab a good scrub brush and some soapy water and give your garage door a good cleaning. Don't forget to also clean along the bottom of the door and around all of the guides, both on the floor and along the sides of the door. While you're at it, make sure all the moving parts are lubricated with a healthy dose of white lithium grease.

Install a new garage door opener.

A lot of homeowners blame the action of their garage door on the door when it is actually the opener that is causing problems. Therefore, it is not at all uncommon to install a new garage door opener and see a total transformation in how the door opens and shuts. If your garage door opener is pretty old, consider buying a new one. Not only will it probably operate much more efficiently, it will easily prolong the life of your garage door by not putting it through so much stress.
